Subject: 3 mistakes you're about to make hiring a Content Marketing Specialist
Preview text: Spoiler: mistake #1 isn't finishing this email. Mistake #2 is worse.

You've given 4,100+ trade businesses clarity, consistency and choice.
Your content engine deserves the same.

The ad asks for email, organic social, event promotion and reporting. That's not four jobs. It's one system, aimed at an audience that can smell fluff from a moving ute.

Most applicants have one of those skills. A few have two. Almost none have run a trades business through a recession, built the systems that kept it alive, then spent a decade building marketing engines for businesses just like your clients.

I have. So rather than send a CV, I built this: a real campaign, in your brand, aimed at your audience. Problem first, proof second, ask last. (Post swim, pre coffee. The hair is doing its own strategy session.)

Before you shortlist anyone

3 mistakes made when hiring a Content Marketing Specialist

You've spent 20+ years telling tradies not to guess. Same rule applies here.

1

Hiring one skill, not a system

Great at Reels, shaky on segmentation. Or great at flows, never opened a design tool. Now you're managing three people to do one job.

2

Hiring trades-adjacent instead of trades-tested

People who've marketed at tradies from a desk, but never quoted a job, chased an invoice, or sweated a slow quarter. Lived instincts beat borrowed ones.

3

Hiring competence, not outside-the-box thinking

Someone who runs the calendar exactly as briefed, but never asks "what if we only kept our three most profitable offers?" That question is where growth hides.

Mistake #0: the one that matters most

Not calling Geoff Byfield in for an interview.

I know who I'd be writing to

Your reader is a business owner who's still on the tools at 6pm

Sparkies, plumbers, chippies, builders, landscapers. Time-poor, sceptical of marketing, allergic to jargon, and quietly worried the business owns them rather than the other way around. They don't want theory. They want the template, the number, and the next step.

Dawson Electric RJM Builders Salmon Plumbing

Your clients. Also, for eight years, me.

And I know what makes the product good

Implementation, not information. That's the whole differentiator.

Every competitor sells "business coaching." You sell trade-specific implementation, 350+ tools and templates, and mentors who've actually run these businesses. The content should sell that gap, and the resources below are already proof of it. Most brands hoard this stuff. Giving it away is exactly why it works.

Solves a real cash-flow problem in one page. This is the content tradies actually forward to their mates.

How I built the skills to do this

Not an agency background. A ran-the-business-then-marketed-it background.

2007-2015

Owner/Operator, Second Nature Landscaping

Quoting, crews, cash flow, the lot. Doubled net profit while halving admin hours. Stayed 100% profitable through the 2008 GFC by repositioning the offer instead of discounting it.

2014-Now

Byfield Group, Marketing & Systems

Email, organic social, paid and content systems for dozens of SME service businesses. 5:1 ROI ad engines, 50%+ cuts to wasted spend, and content systems that turn one conversation into a month of assets.

1998-2004

Fintech, enterprise IT, systems

Prudential Bank (Egg UK), 25,000 applications a day. Dialog IT, clients including Cochlear and AGL. Handy when your ESP, CRM and reporting all need to talk to each other.

Mailchimp Klaviyo ActiveCampaign Meta Ads Google & YouTube GA4 / GTM Looker Studio Photoshop Illustrator WordPress Xero Pipedrive

Receipts from the tools years

What running a trades business actually looked like

Your content has to sound like it was written by someone clients trust. Here's what mine said.

★★★★★

"From all the trades used to complete our house and land, Second Nature was the easiest contractor to deal with. Geoff was in constant contact to let us know the status of the job. Nothing was too much trouble."

Chris Forsyth, Mechanical Draftsman, Casuarina

★★★★★

"Having been cheated by one supplier, I asked around and Second Nature was recommended. You can trust Geoff and his team. They are reliable, efficient, honest and hard working. Geoff communicates effectively, and the invoice is clear and accurate."

Peter Chapman, Management Consultant, Hope Island

★★★★★

"My gratitude and special thanks for the attention to detail and your commitment to doing an excellent job. Your team's professional and punctual conduct was truly appreciated, and the time frames for completion were accurate."

Nalini Watson, Company Director, Salt, Kingscliff

Reporting & Analytics

Medical services client: ad spend audit

Overspending with a silent agency. Built Looker Studio dashboards that showed exactly where budget was leaking.

50% cut in monthly ad spend ($10k+/month saved), zero drop in leads.
Email & Segmentation

The Christmas shutdown campaign

Everyone goes dark over the break. Found the segment of owners still working and wrote to them specifically.

Clients signed in the deadest weeks of the year. $500 CAC, $3,000 average LTV.
Partner & Community

"Accredited Installer" program with a manufacturer

Turned an informal referral habit into a formal co-marketing engine. A badge, a partner page, a repeatable system.

Several hundred thousand dollars in referred work, and paid advertising switched off entirely.
Organic Social & Video

The Interview-First content system

Extracts real stories from a short recorded chat, then structures them into multi-channel assets. Video runs on a Descript scene-and-layout setup.

One 30-minute conversation becomes a month of content. Video turnaround down roughly 80%.
Being The Avatar

Second Nature through the 2008 GFC

Luxury spend collapsed. Moved the message from "upgrades" to "protecting your property's value," and showed clients exactly where their money went.

Profitable right through the GFC, plus one premium contract worth $190k+ over five years.

Then I moved to your side of the table

I've done a version of your job, for your kind of client

Before writing content for advisory businesses, I delivered the advisory. Strategy sessions, accountability, implementation. Which means I understand what your mentors deliver, and how to write about it without overselling.

A plumber, no less
★★★★★

"Before the meeting I was at a mental stop-street as to what direction to go in with a big business decision. I had no idea what to expect from Geoff, but very quickly and calmly he assessed my issues and drafted up an action plan."

Kim Cartwright, Category 5 Plumbing and Gas

★★★★★

"I already KNEW what I needed to do, but using this I've achieved 12 months worth of project work in just 4 weeks. It's the power of focus and the power of clarity."

Stewart Reed, Lifestyle First Realty

★★★★★

"I'd been working sporadically for almost 10 months on a system and had pretty much gotten nowhere. After only 4 weeks of working with Geoff I had a complete and fully-functional system in place."

Emma Patterson, Emma Patterson Graphic Design

★★★★★

"Each week he helps me to refocus, motivate and really make my time productive. Not just a coach but has great business insight as well. Very valuable."

Melanie Brennan, BlueBee Social

★★★★★

"It felt like I had an ally in my corner. He helped me get out of the way of myself and be more objective. He does not force himself or his ideas on you, but rather helps you find your path with his own guidance."

What this email is deliberately not doing

Two ways this could have gone wrong

✕ Example 1: Unprofessional
hey guys!!! 👋 so like, i do marketing stuff lol, resume attached, hope this finds u well, anywayyy lmk!! 🙏🚀

No positioning, no proof, no plan.

✕ Example 2: Too Salesy
🚨 last chance!! hire me now!! 50% more results guaranteed!! act today!! don't miss out!! 🚨

Five CTAs, zero credibility. Straight to spam.

The third option: lead with the problem, back it with numbers, make one clear ask. That's how I'd write yours too.

The unwanted outcome

What happens if this seat stays empty

Somewhere out there is a trade advisory brand with a fraction of your track record and a worse delivery model, out-posting and out-nurturing you to the same audience. Louder content engine. Lesser product.

Watching a weaker competitor win the algorithm? Nooooo. 😱

Fixable. It just needs someone who has lived on both sides of this exact equation.

Frequently anticipated objections

Fair questions, answered honestly

Q. "You haven't actually used Ontraport."

Correct, not yet. I've built and run ESP and CRM stacks across Mailchimp, Klaviyo, ActiveCampaign and ConvertKit, and wired CRM and finance systems into single reporting pipelines. The platform is the easy part. Segmentation logic, automation architecture and deliverability are the actual skill, and that transfers in days.

Q. "Isn't 25 years of experience overkill for a part-time specialist role?"

Only if the role were pure busywork, and it isn't. I've put enough aside over the years to choose part time work now, which means more time for my teenage girls. Managing content day to day is stable and single focus, and that suits what I'm strongest at: conversion. I want to work on a product I genuinely recommend, as part of a team, rather than being the only one on the job the way consulting has me now. It combines my digital skill with my trade background, and I thrive around people.

Q. "Can a marketing guy actually operate a paint roller?"

Yes, literally. Cert III in Horticulture, eight years running a landscaping crew, and I can still explain the difference between hardscape and softscape to someone at a dinner party who did not ask. I've held a tape measure more recently than most marketers have held a Sharpie.

Full transparency on how this was made

This email took 45 minutes

The actual workflow

  1. 10 min setup. Gave Claude the full strategy, my CVs, PROTRADE's branding and the job ad.
  2. 5 min to cook. First draft out.
  3. 30 min editing. The judgement part. Voice, claims, cuts, what stays and what goes.
  4. Sent.

That's the point. AI does the heavy lifting, I do the thinking. Apply that to a content calendar and you get consistent output at a volume one part-time person shouldn't be able to produce.

Before you decide

Put a face to the words

My daughter and I, Mermaid BeachOne of the two reasons part time work suits me right now.

Sounds great. But let's be real though.

Until we have a chat, there's no real way of knowing whether we can work well together, or if I'm a good fit for the team.

From my side, I'd love to take that first step. And from your side, if that seems like a good use of 15 minutes, you can get in touch on:

Thanks for your time. This is the first time I've tried this and I have no idea if it will work. A/B testing! :)
